The Buffalo Sabres Captaincy

The Buffalo News had an article before Sunday's game about the captain situation for this season. Here is the quote from Lindy Ruff:

“My initial thoughts would be to rotate it again,” Ruff said after Saturday’s practice in HSBC Arena. “We’ve discussed it as a staff but still haven’t come to a conclusion. I think the guys liked it. Each month when I awarded the captaincy, guys gave a little speech and it was something they looked forward to."

I have one thing to say to that, ugh.

The Sabres rotated their captains last year and this team seemed to have lost something heading into the end of the season. A lack of leadership was faulted in some areas as a main reason for this team not winning as often and ultimately not making the playoffs. I really do think that there are captains on this team and that the Sabres can pick one to lead the team. With the number of guys that are on long-term contracts and the number of guys we as fans expect to lead this team, there has to be a captain among one of them. My choice would be Teppo Numminen with Pominville being another really good choice to step in. Pominville has the long term contract while Numminen has the veteran experience and moxie to lead this team.

  1. I like the idea of a rotating captain. There isn't a Drury or a Briere on this team that stands out above the rest. If they are going to go with one captain it should be someone out of their core players. I like Pominville with Roy, and Rivet as A's.
